Valentine’s Day is one of those holiday traditions that is spreading all over the world. Part of it has to do with commercial opportunities but also because everyone likes to celebrate love. Growing up I thought that Valentine’s traditions were very cheesy but lately, I’ve been more relented on celebrations than before. After all, love is the cure for hate and if we can have a day to celebrate love then so be it. The world is in desperate need of more celebrations dedicated to love.
However, there are practices that you can take every day that show love, long after Valentine’s day. Best of all these practices do not have a prize tag and you can start today.
Here are 14 easy practices you can do until Valentine’s day and on.
1. Call a family member or friend.
Calling someone who you haven’t talked to in a while and telling them that they’ve been on their mind is a timeless way to show you care about someone. I remember when I first moved to the USA, I used to buy an international card to call my best friend in Portugal. I used to sit on the kitchen floor where the phone was plugged in and talk to her for hours updating her on the latest gossip.
2. Write a letter or a card
Writing a letter or a card is the most personable loving gesture you can give to someone. When I was little my earliest loving notes were letters I used to write to my grandmother in Cabo Verde. Every time I visit her she reads those letters to me and I feel as if she’s retributing back. My mother’s favorite gift has always been a good card. She loves reading personal notes dedicated to her with teary eyes.
3. Gifting a life-changing book
Someone once told me that you gift someone something you personally love. A favorite book is a perfect gift. My uncle has sent me “21 Lessons for the 21 Century”, “Chiquinho” and my current reading, “Viagem a Portugal” from Turkey all the way to Cairo. I can’t explain the amount of happiness I felt upon receiving the books. I also gifted the classics of “Little Prince”, “The Diary of Anne Frank” and the “Harry Potter” series.
If you have a talent for drawing, photography, painting, and creative arts then you can create your unique gift for a loved one.
You don’t have to be a perfect cook as there are plenty of recipes and video instructions on how to make anything. Making heart-shaped cookies can also be a family tradition that kids will surely enjoy.
6. Inviting people over
Inviting someone over for a warm drink and a homemade cake is my favorite. It’s a blessing to host someone and have friendly conversations. It’s a perfect way to build and strengthen a bond.
7. Going on a walk
We live in the busiest era in the history of mankind. Taking the time out of our busy day to be present with someone while walking is the most pleasant gift you can give to someone you love.
8. Donate to those in need
It’s important to know that many people are alone and in terrible situations. As lovely as the day of love is we can’t forget about those who might be feeling the opposite for whatever reason. Donating something that you need to someone will get better used, is demonstrating that love is more powerful than anything on Earth.
Some gifts are done in secret. The best gift in life is when someone prays for you. There isn’t anything more magical than a prayer done towards someone.
10. I love you
This is very challenging for me, saying the words “I love you”. I have to remind myself to tell my children that I love them. As soon as I tell them I love them, their facial expression relaxes and they hug and kiss me.
11. Movie Night
An intentional movie night does not have to be the only ideal for couples. It’s also a nice event for a group of friends and even with your children. Throw in some popcorn, snacks, and drinks then you have a perfect Valentine’s Day.
12. Cooking a special dinner
Cooking a special dinner with someone’s favorite dish demonstrates attentiveness and definitely love for someone. This gesture can be done if you have an early relationship, or even with friends and family.
13. Playing games
Playing games and making someone laugh is the greatest gift for lifting someone’s day. Laughing is an instant mood lifter and creates long-lasting bonds and memories.
14. Asking what you can do
This is my personal favorite which is allowing someone to take a break and asking them what you can do to help them out. For me, taking care of my chores and kids while I relax for the day would be the best gift someone can give me.
These gestures can be free and don’t have to be applied only on Valentine’s day. However, it could be a good time to apply these principles and make them a habit. Spreading love is the best gift you can give to someone and best of all it’s never in vain. Serving is the best gift you can give to yourself. If you have done an act of kindness you probably have felt that heart-warming feeling of satisfaction. There you have it, folks, I hope you get to apply some of these gestures on the day of love and onwards.
